Conservation Volunteer in Sri Lanka
In August 2024 I spent two weeks volunteering in Galle, Sri Lanka. We completed various conservation activities, which are explained in more detail below.

Mangrove Conservation
We worked through the process of collecting mangrove seeds, planting the collected seeds into individualized bags for initial growth, and then planting week old sprouts along lagoon coastlines to decrease the effect of coastline erosion. We collected well over 100 seeds and planted around 75 sprouts.
River Cleanup
We kayaked a local river and collected floating garbage along the coastline to decrease the amount of pollution in the local community. The final collection weighed in at 7.5 kilograms.

Sea Turtle Conservation
We worked with sea turtles seeking rehabilitation at a local sea turtle hatchery. We cleaned tanks, filled tanks with sea water, prepped food for the sea turtles and fed the sea turtles, along with various other tasks surrounding cleaning that the hatchery required.
Beach Cleanup
We walked along local beaches and collected garbage along the coastline. We divided the collected trash into plastics, metals, and glass for recycling.

Tree Planting at a Local Elementary School
We worked with a local elementary school to plant around 10 new tree saplings along the schools perimeter. We worked with school children of varying age, teaching them about the tree growth process and the importance of maintaining our wildlife.
