Study Abroad at Politecnico di Milano

During my spring semester in 2023 I had the opportunity to study at Politecnico di Milano, located in Milan, Italy. Studying abroad was something I never thought I would be able to experience as a low-income student at NYU, however through the GLASS Program I have been able to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.

A Broadened Global Perspective

Coming from a low income family, I never thought that I would have the chance to travel the world. Through the GLASS program, I have been able to travel all throughout Europe, learning more than I ever possibly could through a textbook. Through this travel, and engaging with international students at my host university, I have gained a broadened global perspective...

A Focus on Sustainability

Studying abroad has not only affected the way I view the world, but I have also gained a wider perspective on academics by learning from experts in their field and taking courses at my host university that are not offered at my home institution. I have learned about sustainable processes from the leaders in the global industry through my courses at PoliMi, specifically surrounding recycling processes and electrochemical technologies for water and wastewater treatment.

Personal Development

My study abroad experience in Italy has not only been a chance for me to see the world, but also a chance for personal growth. Prior to my arrival, I realized that I held a somewhat closed-minded perspective. However, being surrounded by diverse people and cultures, I have learned so much more than I ever thought I could. The interactions I had with fellow students and locals broadened my horizons and helped me foster a more inclusive mindset. Being abroad gave me the chance to engage in meaningful discussions with individuals from different backgrounds helped me learn more about diverse perspectives.

Additionally, this experience has completely altered my introverted nature. Stepping out of my shell, I actively sought opportunities to connect with others, overcoming my reservations and embracing new situations. This newfound confidence and willingness to engage have not only enriched my study abroad journey but also equipped me with valuable skills for the future. By overcoming my introversion and honing these discussion abilities, I have gained skills that will help me in future collaborative environments in the workforce. My study abroad journey in Italy has not only expanded my worldview but also empowered me to approach the world with a more inclusive and open-minded mindset, while equipping me with the essential communication skills to thrive in the workforce.
